Dornfelder

Dornfelder is a German grape through and through, suited to cool northern vineyards and capable of producing a robust, deeply coloured red where lighter varieties struggle. This alcohol free version is made at the Einig Zenzen winery, a Mosel family business growing wine since 1636 and trading under its own name since 1939. The wine is fermented in full first, then dealcoholized, which is why it keeps varietal character instead of tasting like grape juice. Expect deep cherry colour, pomegranate, red currant and ripe cassis, a delicate floral nose and smooth tannins over balanced acidity. Serve it slightly cooler than you would a full strength red. It handles grilled meats, pasta dishes, mature cheeses and hearty vegetarian food without disappearing, which is more than a lot of alcohol free reds manage.
