Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand's calling card, and Ara has been working the Wairau Valley for more than twenty years, close enough to the ocean to taste it. This one starts life as a finished full-strength wine. Spinning cone technology then separates the alcohol from the aroma, and the aroma goes back in along with a little premium grape juice to rebuild mouthfeel. The varietal markers survive the trip. Blackcurrant and fresh herbs on the nose, then grapefruit and tropical fruit across the palate with layers of passionfruit and pineapple, finishing crisp and dry. It lands at 13 calories per 100ml, about 75% fewer than a standard 12.5% wine, and it is vegan certified and accredited under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. Judges have taken it seriously. Best Wine at the 2022 WinePilot Zero Alcohol Wine Show and 95 points at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. Serve it cold, ideally with a platter.
