Whisky Alternative

Spain got to alcohol-free whisky long before the current zero proof boom. Whissin comes from Industrias Espadafor, a drinks house that has been operating in Granada since 1939, and it was the first alcohol-free whisky-flavored product to reach the market. The method is the interesting part. It uses the same ingredients whisky is built from, but they are macerated rather than fermented, so the result carries the color, aroma and warm sweetness of a classic distillate at 0.0% alcohol. It is gluten free too. Recognition came fast. In its launch year of 1998 it was named Best Spanish Product and Best Alcohol-Free Product in the world at the SIAL trade fair. The 700ml bottle is meant to be treated like the real thing, poured over ice, mixed the way you would mix whisky, or simply drunk from a glass. Espadafor files it under aperitifs and pitches it at bars, restaurants, cafes and pubs.
