Explore The GuideVienna's Rich Brewing Legacy
Vienna (Wien in German) has a long history of brewing beer. As with most of Europe, brewing dates back as far as the Middle Ages, but in Vienna, the renaissance occurred in the mid-19th century when Austrian brewer Anton Dreher combined English malting techniques with Bavarian bottom-fermentation to create the revolution known as Vienna Lager.
It quickly became popular across Europe and was even brought to the Americas when Austrian archduke Maximilian I was installed as Emperor of Mexico and the German/Austrian immigrants that came with him established breweries.
Mexican beers such as Negra Modelo and Dos Equis Ambar are direct descendants of the Vienna Lager style.
The NA Beer Renaissance in Austria
The NA beer market in Austria, like a lot of the world, is now experiencing a renaissance of its own. Last year, Austrian NA beer production increased 8.4% while the regular market remained stagnant.
The main NA beer option in Vienna since 1991 is called Null Komma Josef... a word play on the German for 0.5%, Null = Zero, Komma = commas are used in Austria instead of decimal points, and Josef is a placeholder name like John or Joe and is slang for something of insignificant importance.
Austria is a rather small country with a population of 9 million across 9 federal states and bordered by 8 countries, which makes it more likely to taste the fare from the rest of the region and its neighbors right in the capital of Vienna.
"While I find Ottakringer's regular beer a little too industrially sweet and nutty, their NKJ Alkoholfreies bier with less alcohol sugars actually is an improvement over their alcoholic flagship Helles."-- Vienna's NAmbassador

Stores in Vienna with Non-Alcoholic Beer
Pro Tip
Look for 'Alkoholfreies Bier' near the bottled beer section, not in the soda aisle. Most stores group NA beers with regular beers for easy comparison shopping.
Bars & Restaurants in Vienna with Non-Alcoholic Beer
Pretty much every establishment has an NA beer option. Even if it is not clearly on the menu, often they still have it. Usually when it is on the menu, it will be at the bottom of the beer or bottled-beer (flaschen-bier) sections labeled "Alkoholfreies Bier", not in the alcohol-free drinks section.

Schweizerhaus Special
Experience beer garden chaos with NA from the tap (Fass in German)! Their Budweiser Budvar NA is served cold and frothy under the trees. While the bottled version can be watery with metallic notes, the tap version is indistinguishable from its alcoholic counterpart - perhaps with slightly less head.
Wurstelstand Secret
Even at the famous Wurstelstand (sausage stands) they will have NKJ, Gosser Naturgold or Schlossgold. So why not have your Wiener and NA beer too? Anywhere really, throw a stone...
A Rare Find: Beck's Blue
Beck's Blue (DE) will sometimes be on the menu. It's a little hard to come by as it is only sold through wholesale drink distributors that aren't locked down through contracts with other breweries. I've had it at some nightclubs in the city or Schilfhutte and Gastwirtschaft Zum Ockermuller, but these are not central locations. If you see it, enjoy the rarity. European Beck's is still a great beer and their NA Blue is even better.
Trivia for North Americans
Frankfurter vs. Wiener
The standard hotdog style sausage in Vienna (Wien) is called Frankfurter, and in Frankfurt they are called Wieners (Vienna's). Geography can be confusing!
Wiener Schnitzel Truth
The famous Wiener Schnitzel is not a sausage at all, but a flattened cutlet of veal, floured, egged, breaded and fried. Often it's made out of cheaper pork or chicken instead and this is called Schnitzel nach Wiener Art (Vienna Style).
Toasting with NA Beer
When toasting NA beer, instead of saying the usual German 'Prost!', instead say 'Schonen Urlaub!' as in have a nice holiday (from alcohol).
Cultural Connection
Schnitzel nach Wiener Art is fairly similar to the Italian Piccata Milanese, although the latter is usually served with pasta instead of potato salad or fries!
